Humanities Fellowships at New York University in Abu Dhabi
Due: October 12 2015
Description: The program aims in particular to build a center of outstanding research capacity in areas of the Humanities that are relevant for the study of the Arabic world, its rich intellectual, religious, and scientific history, its cultural and artistic heritage as expressed in traditional and new media, and its interaction with other cultures in the past and present.
There are two levels of Fellowship:
- Senior Fellowship for distinguished senior scholars with outstanding scholarly accomplishment, including an internationally recognized publication record.
- Junior Fellowship for post-doc level (Ph.D. within the past 5 years) working on a dissertation-to-book project
Jordanian Theatre OnLine
Jordan’s New Think Theatre runs an Arabic-language web-site posting brief notices and streaming their satirical plays, including a meta-drama about why Jordan does not generate much theatre (“Theatre in the Making”). The project also runs a festival and maintains a registry.

CFP: World Literature Today

A general audience magazine for readers interested in world literature, World Literature Today invites essays (25oo words, about 10 pages), book reviews, and interviews related to literary and cultural topics from any geographic region or language area, within a contemporary scope from the 1990s to today. The preferred style is a clear and lively discussion targeting a broad audience, with a minimum of scholarly apparatus. The magazine (and its blog) has published articles on Arabic literature, and some on Theatre and Drama—but Arabic drama is hardly represented.
WLT also prints translated literature – traditionally fiction and poetry, but drama translators can submit a query.

CFP: Conference on Languages, Cultures and Gender
Auspices: Ege University, Turkey. Co-Organised by ADİKAM (European Languages and Cultures Research & Application Centre) and EKAM (Women’s Studies Centre) of Ege University.
Conference: 11-13 May 2016, Izmir, Turkey
Call: Inviting participants exploring gender themes, with a special emphasis on how language and culture defines, affects, influences, shapes and visualises gender in a wide spectrum ranging from the individual to the communal across an array of disciplines.
Topics include: Transmission of gender in translated works; Gender in the Humanities; Perception of Gender in folklore, myths, legends, taboos, symbolism and rituals; LGBT studies, sexual identities.
Language: English, German, and Turkish (by invitation only).
Submission (English): For talks (up to 20 minutes) submit 250-word proposal plus a short biography (around 100 words), with subject line “2016 Paper Submission”. These grants are intended to support artists (individuals, collaborations, or collectives, from or living in the Arab World, and/or engaged with the Arab World) to develop their practice. Among other activities, the grants can be used to pursue threads of research, stage an event, make new work, publish, travel, take part in a residency or workshop, or present an exhibition or performance. The grants are available for part of or a whole activity or project. About 10 grants (of about 5000 euros).

Notice: Sundance Institute, founded by US actor Robert Redford, has run international cultural exchange programs for independent artists, including the Rawi Screenwriters Lab in conjunction with the Royal Film Commission of Jordan (to develop writers’ first or second narrative screenplays), and documentary initiatives in cooperation with the Arab Fund for Arts & Culture and other organizations. Their “lab” model encourages creative innovation and incorporates one-on-one project guidance from distinguished Dramaturgs and Creative Advisors. They are now expanding to the Middle East/North African region in two programs: (1) a theatre lab in the MENA region; and (2) inviting six artists to the Theatre-Makers Residency at the Sundance Resort in Utah, where they develop new work with dramaturgs.
